Guide to Configuring A Blue Moon

A guide to configuring A Blue Moon, a Fallout: New Vegas modlist.

DXVK (compatibility)

DXVK is a great program to help reduce latency, as well as significantly improving performance. Note that DXVK is already installed and enabled in the modlist for you, to use at your own leisure. Please read the DXVK mod page for more details on what this provides.

To understand whether your eligible for DXVK, please refer to the FNV Performance Guide. It may seem intimidating and abrupt at first, but please do read through this and understand the terminology and fundamentals of this guide. Otherwise, you may be gimping yourself out of a HUGE performance boost.

Note that you only need to refer to the Graphics Drivers and Windows section, as everything else before that is already handled within the modlist. Anything else after that is purely for your own disposal, for you to tweak to your personal system. It is highly recommended to install DXVK when possible. Most modern GPUs natively support DXVK, so you simply only need to follow the instructions provided.

Note, that some users have reported having issues with DXVK, as it was causing AMD Driver Timeouts while using NVR. To remedy this issue, some users had to disable DXVK on their system. But still feel free to try it if you do disable DXVK you will have to enable windowed mode if you wish to alt tab otherwise the game will break.

If you do encounter issues and wish to swap to windowed mode, go into the falloutcustom.ini within MO2 or by going to its folder within the install A Blue Moon\profiles\A Blue Moon. Once inside the falloutcustom.ini, under [Display], find the line bFull Screen=1 and change it to bFull Screen=0.

New Vegas Reloaded

New Vegas Reloaded, or NVR for short, is otherwise the best solution to overhauling graphics significantly within Fallout: New Vegas, or TTW in this case. It provides a suite of configurable shaders that can be applied to really make the game pop out.

However, NVR can be taxing on many systems, as it is rendering various modern shaders and effects on top of an old game engine, which requires a lot of computing power. Note that this is not recommended to install if you want a stable and performance friendly playthrough but can greatly overhaul your graphics.

Alternatively, look into using Reshade if you wish to overhaul graphics.

Using New Vegas Reloaded

This list supports New Vegas Reloaded and includes compatible presets.

To install NVR:

  1. Join the Elder Scrolls Reloaded Discord
  2. Download the latest Ready build
  3. Follow their documentation to install manually

NVR is optional but recommended. Presets are included, but NVR-related mods are disabled by default. I would also like to add that the mod “Gettin Jiggy With Bloom on The Strip and Freeside” Is Highly recommended if using the included Presets as it is the intended look for the list and is crucial for my ideal take on both the strip and freeside..

Included NVR Presets:

  • H2O
  • Caffeine

New Vegas Reloaded Profiles

There are two MO2 profiles made specifically for New Vegas Reloaded.
When launching the game through MO2, make sure to select the profile you want to use:

  • A Blue Moon – NVR
  • A Blue Moon Casual – NVR

If you don’t use one of these profiles while using NVR, the game’s colors won’t look correct and you may see general discoloration issues in game.

DO NOT USE THESE IF YOU ARE NOT USING NVR!

If using NVR, make sure:

  • Cartographer is enabled
  • NVR is Loaded at the top of the New Vegas Reloaded Separator
  • Enable NVR mods in MO2
  • Optionally enable:
    • Caffeine PBR Disabler
    • Caffeine NVR Cinema Disabler
    • Caffeine Performance Mode
  • Create an empty mod within MO2 and name it NVR and drag it to the top of the New Vegas Reloaded Separator, then drag the contents of the zipped NVR file you grabbed from their discord into that folder.

The Caffeine PBR Disabler and Caffeine NVR Cinema Disabler can help for those struggling to run NVR, if you’re really struggling with performance you can use the included Caffeine Performance Mode. Lets all thank Salamand3r for his work on Caffeine!

BSA Decompressor

BSA Decompressor can help improve performance by repacking the game files without zlib compression. This practice is mainly exercised for modern day systems. To use it, simply run the program from your modlist installation locations and point the path to the stock game folder within the modlist installation.

This is Highly recommended regardless of your system as this can both decrease load times decrease stuttering.

Dont Like Hardcore?

There is an optional profile within MO2 which you can swap to. Note that hardcore mode is the intended and recommended experience for A Blue Moon, however it can still be played without it. It is recommended to try Hardcore mode before swapping out of it as the list is built around this specifically. If you still do not find enjoyment in it, you can then swap to the non-hardcore mode.
